Pop a cap in your house

Just a quick post to keep things ticking over while we get our act together blog-wise. This is my favourite cap from a recent exhibition of work by a small bunch of very talented graphic design graduates. To celebrate being in business for a whole 90 years, New Era launched what sounds like a good fun competition, posting a select group of people a kit containing a blank cap, pens and markers with a completely open invitation to let their imaginations run wild. The True Face of Retrofuturism

J Mays (of Ford design fame) popularised the term ‘Retrofuturism’ in the 1990s when he used it to describe his vision for future Ford products that would draw inspiration from its past. It had been widely used since the 1960s, when people started to think about how people from previous eras imagined things to be in the future. A difficult idea to get your head around, I know. But I think the following picture demonstrates Retrofuturism in yet another way.

Where we’re going, we won’t need any petrol. Or any Sat-Navs. Or even windscreens for that matter.

To a self-confessed car nut, your choice of hire car can make or break a holiday. At the airports in England you’ll see line after line of brand new Golfs and Astras, waiting for the hordes of American tourists to prise themselves out of their plane seats and flop into their Euro-hatches (I’m not accusing all Americans of being immobile fat people like on Wall-E… I know from experience that a good few of them are downright skinny). But are they happy with what they get? Does a Golf or an Astra give them the “British” experience that they’ve come over here to find? I’m not so sure it does. Shouldn’t they be offered the choice of hiring a Morgan instead, and handed flat caps and headscarves at the welcome desk? I’d say yes, particularly on the grounds of what Avis offer in their own country…

Let’s bring the British car hire experience into the 21st Century!
